Time and a Half for $8 an Hour
$12.00per overtime hour · 15 overtime hours this week
| Hours | Count | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | 40 | $320 |
| Overtime | 15 | $180 |
| Total for the week | 55 | $500 |
| Blended hourly rate | — | $9.09 |
Worked every paid week of the year, that pattern comes to $26,000.
Time and a half for $8 an hour is $12.00 per overtime hour. Federal law owes overtime on hours past 40 in a workweek, not on long days, so a 55-hour week at $8 pays $500 — $320 at the regular rate plus $180 for 15 overtime hours.
Overtime rates for $8 an hour
| Rate | Per hour | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Regular 1x | $8.00 | Up to 40 hours in the workweek |
| Time and a half 1.5x | $12.00 | Every hour past 40, under federal law |
| Double time 2x | $16.00 | Not federal — some states and contracts only |
Federal overtime is weekly, not daily. It is owed on hours past 40 in a workweek, so four ten-hour days is still 40 hours and still carries no federal premium, however long those days felt. Plenty of calculators imply otherwise by offering an hours-per-day field.
The workweek is a fixed, recurring period of seven consecutive days that the employer sets in advance. It does not have to start on a Monday, but it cannot be moved around to avoid paying a premium, and two weeks cannot be averaged together to bring one of them under 40.
Five overtime hours a week at $12.00 adds $3,120 over 52 paid weeks; ten hours a week adds $6,240. To earn an extra $10,000 in a year at this rate takes about 16 overtime hours a week, every week.
Tipped work at $8 an hour
Rates in this range often belong to tipped roles, where the arithmetic works differently. The federal cash wage for tipped employees is $2.13 an hour, unchanged since 1991, with tips expected to make up the rest.
If tips do not bring the total to at least the full minimum wage for the hours worked, the employer has to make up the difference — that shortfall is theirs to cover, not yours to absorb. Several states have abolished the tip credit entirely and require the full minimum in cash before tips. At $8 an hour, $16,640 a year assumes 40 paid hours every week, which tipped schedules rarely deliver.
How $8 an hour compares
- It is 1.1x the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, which is $1,560 more a year at the same hours.
- It is below the US median, at 26% of the median full-time wage.
- It is under Washington’s minimum wage of $17.13, the highest state floor in the country, so this rate would not be legal there.
Federal minimum wage $7.25, in effect since July 2009 (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division). Median earnings from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Usual Weekly Earnings, second quarter 2026 — median usual weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers. The hourly equivalent of $31.28 is that weekly figure over 40 hours, which is a derivation rather than a separately published median hourly wage. Highest state minimum: Washington, effective 1 January 2026.
How this is worked out
The default assumes 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, which is 2,080 paid hours a year. Yearly pay is the hourly rate multiplied by those hours; monthly is the year split twelve ways.
Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every two weeks, which is 26 pay periods a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, which is 24. That is why those two rows differ above, and why two months of the year carry a third biweekly cheque.

Common questions
How much is $8 an hour a month?
$8 an hour is $1,386.67 a month before tax, at 40 hours a week. That is the yearly total of $16,640 divided by twelve, not four weekly cheques — a month averages about 4.33 weeks, so four weeks of pay at $320 comes to less than a month's share.
What is $8 an hour after taxes?
Every figure on this page is gross, before income tax, payroll tax and deductions. Take-home from $16,640 depends on your state, filing status, pre-tax deductions and local taxes, and those move the result by thousands — so no single after-tax number would be true for most readers. Social Security and Medicare alone take 7.65% of wages from an employee before any income tax applies.
Is $8 an hour above minimum wage?
$8 an hour is at or above the federal minimum wage of $7.25, which has not changed since July 2009. Most states set a higher minimum than the federal floor, and $8 is below Washington's $17.13, the highest state rate in force.
Can my employer pay me $8 an hour?
Only if it meets the minimum that applies where you work, which may be a state or city rate rather than the federal $7.25. Tipped roles follow different rules: the federal cash wage for tipped employees is $2.13 an hour, and if tips do not lift the total to the full minimum, the employer has to make up the difference.
How much is $8 an hour a week?
$320 a week at 40 hours, and $640 for a two-week pay period. Hours in this range are often variable, so a week with cut shifts reduces that directly — there is no salary underneath to hold the total steady.
